For tomorrow:

1. Tonight you are learning about the importance of a tiny European country called Portugal. Mainly through the efforts of the third son of King John the 1st, a prince named Henry will build something important and encourage something important. Let's find out what was so important. Watch the two videos below and be ready to answer these questions tomorrow.

Video #1 Prince Henry

Video #2 Portuguese voyages

Questions (You can copy and paste these into a word doc - don't forget a copy in your dropbox)
Title - The Portuguese and Prince Henry

  • What was Henry's nickname?
  • What did he build and why?
  • What was developed there?
  • What was his #1 goal - BUT, how would they get there? and was his goal achieved?

2. In class today we briefly touched on primary resources - "eyewitness" accounts to history. Primary resources, or sources) are the BEST way to learn about, experience, and understand history.  In class tomorrow we will begin to talk about the Conquistadores - the conquerors!  There were thousands of them from Spain. Spain carved out an empire in the New World as it was increasingly called. One of the first conquistadors to explore what is now a part of the US was Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. We will talk about his story tomorrow. Read this excerpt from his book La Relacion (The Relation) from his time wandering around the southwest part of the USA.  Highlight what you feel is important to know if you were a conquistador about to travel to this area and had just had the opportunity to read this book.
