Tuesday, February 7th

Can't we all just get along?

Who Should Have The Rights To Kennewick Man?

For tomorrow, you will choose and defend why either the Native Tribes in Washington or the Scientists should be the group to keep Kennewick Man. You cannot take both sides. You must choose one.

As far as I can tell the Army Corps of Engineers (the government) still has control over the Kennewick Man remains. This was the decision back in 2005. In 2004, a Federal judge basically sided with the scientists and said they should have the opportunity to study the remains but their contact with Kennewick Man is very limited. The judge ruled against NAGPRA - the law giving Native peoples the rights to any remains found in our country. Now is your chance to weigh in on the issue.

On a piece of paper write the title - Who Should Have The Rights To Kennewick Man?

A. Next, skip a line and write one of the following choices below:
  • I believe the Native peoples should have the rights to Kennewick Man. Here is why:
  • I believe the Scientists should have the rights to Kennewick Man. Here is why:
 B. Then, write three (in complete sentences) reasons why you have taken the position above. This may be in the form of a list. Be prepared to defend your position in class tomorrow.

For a closer look at NAGPRA - go to this site and you will find some info under What is NAGPRA?

For a closer look at the Scientists' position check this out. The writer says the government is interfering with learning about the past especially since more remains were found in the Columbia near where Kennewick Man was found.
