One of the more famous documents to come out of the American Revolution was Thomas Paine's Common Sense. Paine wrote this essay in early 1776 and was basically asking, "Why hasn't anyone declared independence yet?" It was very influential and, to use modern speech, got the ball rolling towards breaking ties with Great Britain. However, please understand that not everyone is going to want to declare independence.
What I want you to do is read a few of these passages from the document. Make a copy of it and print it out. After reading the passages, simply rewrite them using language that a THIRD GRADER could understand, understand? Okay, good, be ready to talk about it on Monday!
