DIRECTIONS: When you link to the Jamestown Exhibit site, the first thing you will need to do is skip two chapters. Mr. M will have shown how to do this during class. But, if you forget, there is a right arrow located on the middle bar in the site. That takes you to the next chapters. Okay, just follow the instructions below and you will be fine!
- In the first box for Chapter 3, it says to "Play the Animation". Do this and what do you see that may be a problem with English claims for land in North America?
- The second box for Chapter 3 gives some information about the Virginia Company of London. This is the company which was granted a charter for North America.
- What did the charter grant them?
- What did the company have to provide?
- Box three of Chapter 3 continues to give more information about the Virginia Company of London.
- How was the company organized? In other words, how did it work?
- What were they hoping for?
- In box four of Chapter 3, you will learn how was involved in the expedition. Who made up this first group of adventurers?
- Box five of Chapter 3 identifies the ships of the first expedition - can you name them?
Now, skip over to Chapter 5. Skip over the Chapter about the Powhatan. We will learn about them tomorrow night. Here are your final questions:
- In box two of Chapter 5, what happens to the Englishmen the very first night off the ship?
- What will be the challenge they will face?
- Read boxes three and four to get the picture of how the Englishmen were able to stay in that area. Some of what I read here, I didn't even know. The history channel people did a nice job with the primary sources.
- In box six of Chapter 5, you will learn how the Englishmen picked their final spot to build a fort. What did George Percy have to say about it in his journal? Did he give some reasons why this was the spot they wanted?
- Box seven details how important it was to finish the fort as soon as possible. Can you tell me why?
- Finally, box eight of Chapter Five, George Percy explains, 400 years ago, what their fort was like. What did he say?
