  1. Mr. Salerno's presentation touched me becuase of how those people's lives are so much different then ours.I think it was really nice of him to go on that service trip. Yes, I would do something like that because I want to help people around the world. Yes I would, because I would like to help them.

  3. During Mr. Salerno's presentation I was very surprised to learn how poor they really are and how most of the people live in extreme poverty. Also it surprised me to learn the statistics of the Lakota people. I think the service trip is a great idea as well as a great opportunity to help others. I would do something to help others because it reminds me how lucky I really am and it feels good help people less fortunate than you. I would do something to help the Lakota people because in their houses/cars/trailers where they live they are really run down. Also I feel bad that the Government kicked them out of their home and killed so many of their people, then put them in a place that has brutal winters with shack like houses that don’t keep out the cold. The Lakota tribe is very appreciative and even though they are poor they give present to those who help them. Also when you give, the more you receive.

  5. Mr. Salerno's presentation made a big impact on me. I didn't think that anywhere in the USA people lived in such poor conditions. I think that the trip he took to help the people of the Lakota tribe was a great thing to do. If I had the chance to do something like that I would love to help out. If someone would ask me to help out in the Lakota tribe I would love to help. Like he said, when you give someone something like a good shelter or place to live, you get even more back in return than you ever will know. The people will also be forever grateful for what you have done to help them.

  6. Mr. Salerno's presentation impacted me because when he was typing his stories, he said that he cried and it's really sad to think about how little they have but how they can be so happy. I am really glad that Mr. Salerno got to go on a service trip there and if I had the opportunity to go on a service trip there, I would to help the people who need it because by doing something like that, you can change someone's life.

  7. That was a very interesting story we were told. My brother went on a trip to the Appalachian Mts. to help people there and he said that it changed his life. He said at first he did it for service hours but by the middle of the trip, he felt very good about himself and didn't even remember that he was getting work service. I might do something similar. However, I don't know if i would go alone. If i could go with my family or a bunch of my friends I definitely would go because it has an impact on someone's life.

  8. Mr.Salerno's presentation was very inspiring because it showed how service is imperative in life. His talked inspired me to help others more because there are so many tools and resources that I take for granted that many people do not have. If I could I would help the Lakota so they could live an improved life.

  9. Mr. Salerno's presentation really made me think about how bad the conditions are for people around the world, especially the Lakota people, living under the poverty level. His service trip to see them was very useful, since he helped the Lakota people while there, and he inspired people from USM to try to go there later and help out the Lakota people more. When I'm older I might try to go to help the Lakota people if I could. If I had the opportunity, I would definitely help the Lakota people.

  10. Mr. Salerno's presentation touched me because he went to this place and meet theese kids hes never seen before and helps and gives these kids his stuff. If i was ever offered to help people in need or Lakota i would do it. because it may not be something you think is important but to the people that you help it is very important to them they are very happy about it.

The presentation impacted me because the rule of the Lakota people, "You recieve a gift you give a gift." Something like that, that made me feel happy, that they are so respectful to one another. I think his trip was very neat and, he probably helped the kids a lot, with just doing a little. I would love to go somewhere like he did. It would be very touching to see how they live their lives, opposed to how we live our lives. Yes, I could help the Lakota because they have done nothing wrong to us, and it would be a great accomplishment in my life, if I could help the Lakota people.

  13. the thing that i was most touched by is when he said that the Lakota people were the poorest in America. Another thing that touched me was there houses and how beat up they were. I thought that his service trip was a great thing for him to do. i would defenetly do something like this because i would like to help the people who dont have the things we have. Lastly, if i had an opportunity to do this, i would do it because helping other people is the right thing to do

  14. Mr Salerno's presentation in spired me to volunteer. I think that it is amazing that he got a chance to really make a difference in the Lakota community. I don't think that I would be able to do any thing like this because the people live in such extreme poverty. I would defiantly help Lakota because the need it a lot.

  15. Mr Salerno's speech impacted me because I was surprised that the Lakota people only had that little piece of land. I also was shocked at the statistics of the Lakota people. It seems like almost every Lakota person has some disease, poverty, mental problem or dropout problem. The service trip really seemed helpful to the Lakota people because they pretty much have nothing and they got something from Mr. Salerno. I would help the Lakota people because they seem very nice and they deserve to be helped. If I were given the opportunity to help the Lakota people, I would instantly say yes. To help these people would not only make me feel good, but it would support them and I could have a place in their memory.

  16. I was very touched by Mr. Salerno's prestitation. Seeing how those people lived and where was almost devastating, to have that kind of poverty in the US. I think that what Mr. S did was amazing. Going to help people he didn't know, had not a lot in common with, and knew they couldn't give him much back was very heartfelt of him. Although they gave him some trinkets and that baseball card they didn't give him much back in return for his work but he still knew he wanted to go back and help. After hearing his talk I do think I would want to do something like this in the future. Helping someone you know is one thing but reaching out to complete strangers is a lot more rewarding. I would like to help the Lakota people. They are apart of our country and I would like to do all that I can for them to have a better life here in our country. Then once I know I have done something to impact the needy people of my country I would like to help people in America, then reach to South America, and finally all around the world. The reason I would like to help the Lakota people is because for one they are apart of our country and secondly they give in so many ways other than gifts. They become apart of you, and that is something you can never lose. Mr. S said that he feels apart of him is still there on that reservation and if that is how they make you feel then that should tell you how special they really are. When you have a feeling like that you know only someone special can make you feel that way and not all the money in the world.

  17. Mr. Salerno’s presentation was really touching for me because to hear and see the people’s house and style of living was really sad and made me think of how lucky I am. I think it was really kind and thoughtful of Mr. Salerno to go out there and help the people. I think if I had an opportunity to help the Lakota people or even other people I would, because it would just be nice, thoughtful and fun to help out people who have less than you.

  18. Mr. Solarno's speech was very motivational in a way that would make you go to the streets and do as he did. I think it was very considerate of hime to help the Lakota people. I would do an activity like this becausse i think it would show me how lucky i am to live in a healthy and employed society. Yes, I would travel to South Dakota if the oppurtunity arose, because it would be fun to see what the children learn there versus what we learn here.

  19. Mr. Salerno's presentation really opened my eyes to the conditions that some people live in. I fell thankful knowing what a great life I have. His service trip sounded difficult but a good expirience to help those less fortunate than you. I would do something like this in my life because of how rewarding it is to help people in need. Its one thing to donate genorously to them, its another to actually help them. If I was given the opportunity to help the Lakota I would help them. It would be only a week of service, but a lifetime of memories.

  20. it made me think about how much i take for granted and how they are so thankful for the little things that they have.i think that he is very bold for going there and helping in those poor conditions. I am going to do something like this over spring break. i am going to ecuador and working at the working boys center because my dad helped out a lot down there in his earlier life and lived around there for a couple of years. I probably would help in lakota if i went down there with some people and got older

  22. It showed me how poor the Lakota people are and how important service is. I think that it was really nice of him to go and help them. I would go do something like this because you can help someone else and you feel good about making someones life better. I would help the Lakota people because they dont have things, like good houses and a hospital. Also, it could be a new experience. I would help them.

  23. Cheena: Mr. Salerno's presentation was suprising and shocking to me. It was hard to believe that people in our own country could have such harsh and poor living conditions. I think it was great that Mr. Salerno went on a service trip to Lakota. It was very thoughtful. It gave him the chance to help the people who lived there, directly. I would absolutely help others or maybe even go on a service trip, since it would bring me closer to the specific group of people, and make me realize how lucky I am. I would love to help the Lakota people, because they need basic things such as electricity, cars, and clothes. And also in the summer it is very hot for them since they don't have electricity, and in the winter they have to live in run down trailers or houses. The people who live there seem very kind and generous.

  24. I was very surprised. I was assuming that the Lakota people would be less involved with the government, and that they'd want nothing to do with them. I thiink it was an excellent thing of him to go there and help these people. I'd definitely want to do something like this in my life, so that I could see the varying levels of poverty in our own country as well as others. I'd most likely go if I had the oppurtunity.

  25. Mr. Salerno's presentation was very touching. It made me realize that I should be grateful that I am able to go to this school and have a nice house. I think it is very kind that he would go there and work during the summer. I also believe that it makes him a better world citizen. I definitely would do something like this. I would do this because they need help and we are able to give it and it will makes us better people. Also it would be a great learning opportunity to lear about their culture. I would really like to help them, because we have so much in this community and we could help them a lot!

  26. Mr Salerno's presentation made me feel really bad for all of the people there.I knew there was poverty everywhere but when he gave statistics it made the place sound horrible. I think he did a great service by going there and helping them. He probably did a good job if everyone knew and liked him so much. I would try to help someone like that, because I have a lot that they don't have the opportunity to have. I would if I had the opportunity to, but probably when I was older. I would try to get rid of the health issues like the black mold because they need to have safer spots for kids.

  27. Mr. Salerno's presentation was incredible and shocked me because of how the Lakota people live. Their living conditions are terrible and the food they receive from government is extremely unhealthy. They were so thankful to even have Mr. Salerno make them a basketball 'net' out of old tire, even if they did have to play with rocks as a basketball!
I think it's wonderful that Mr. Salerno was given the chance to help the Lakota people by refurbishing their houses. Building and construction is a really good way to help out.
I would love sometime to go out and help people build/refurbish their home. It seems fun to get to know people and help out.
If I was given an opportunity to visit the Lakota, I definitely would! They seem so appreciative of the help they receive, it looks like a great project.

After the presentation, I felt very lucky to be living the way I am today and going to the school I go to. I very much enjoyed his presentation because it helped me become more aware of the poverty in native american reservations. It helped my understanding quite a lot considering the fact that I didn't know much about the reservations and their struggles concerning health and housing. I was inspired by his service trip because when he discussed the houses, clothing, and health issues they have I felt that it was wonderful that they went to go and help them. I love doing work for helping people in all different kinds of communities. I've worked and plan to keep working with Hope house and many daycares. I do this because it helps to remind me of the fact that I'm lucky to be living the way I live and it makes me feel like I'm making a difference and changing lives (i'm not kidding, even if it sounds cheezy) which really is a great feeling. I would love to go and help the Lakota tribe. Not only to help them but to learn about their culture and their ways of living that are different to ours because my family is part native american and I have always been interested about them. Plus, since the government has done nothing (if not, made it worse) we should definitely help.

  29. Mr. Salerno's presentation surprised me because I didn't know that there was a "city" that poor in the United States. If you showed me this, and didn't tell me this was in South Dakota, I would've guessed they were in Cambodia, or India, or Vietnam, or somewhere around there. I think it was cool for him to go on that service trip voluntarily. I would like to do something like this sometime in my life because I have so much compared to them, and I would want to help them. If I was given the opportunity to help them, I would like to go and help them because they haven't really caught up to modern technology in their small reservation in the Badlands, and I would want to see what it would be like to live in such a rural area.

  30. Mr. Salerno's presentation impacted me because it reminded me of how much i have. The trip must of been fun and sad at the same time. Fun because he got to see great people. Sad because these great people are so poor but are so grateful for the vary small things that are necessary in life. I would love to go to see the Lakota people because they are great people who are forever thankful although they have next to nothing. I would definitely help the Lakota people because they need and deserve it.

  31. Mr. Salerno's speach really made a big impact on me. I think that it was great that he helped the Lakota's like that. I would love to help the world like that. I love service work and if someone gave me that oppertunity I would pack my bags and head down to South Dakota this very second. It was so kind of him how he helped those people not only by fixing there shacks but by helping them have a better mental state.

  32. Mr.Salerno's presentation really impacted me. It effected me that even in our country we have poverty like this. It also effected me by how many people have to live this way. I thought it was really great how he gave some of his time to help someone who needed it. Also I think his service trip there is very life changing, to be able to make a change in someone's life even though you are only one person. I would do something like this in my life, because it would be great to know that you made some change in someone's life. I would help the Lakota if I got the chance. I would help them because they are in so much poverty that it hurts me to see people living that way. I would love to know that I made some good change to make them happier in their lives.-Ellie V.W

  34. I find it very sad that America is stereotyped to be such a perfect place, where poverty is slim to none. I always thought places like this didn't exist inside of our country. The service trip he had to go there, I thought must had been very insightful for the teenagers. I might do something like this in the future even. It sounds like they are kind and very generous. If I was given an opportunity like this I would hesitant at first, scared of what it's like there with the harsh condition and the statistics for things like sickness and poverty, so I'd be iffy.

  35. Mr. Salerno's presentation was very touching and I couldn't believe how poor these people were. I think it is wonderful to travel, but to travel and try to help others who aren't as fortunate as us is almost magical. If more people traveled to places like that then we wouldn't take life for granted and we would share more. I would love to do something like that because it is so important for people to give and take and share with others. Share with others knowledge, wealth, and peace. If I had the opportunity to help the Lakota I would because they need help and I think more people should try to help them. They don't love life because of Ipods, but because of the people. Peace is what the world needs. Peace. Love. Hope. Giving. ~Caroline C

  36. When Mr. Salerno told us about how it was life changing i was stuck in confustion. I was thinking "How could some place be that poor, i wondered why they were poor...?" He told us about how they were very loyal to their "Tribe" and i thought that it was very cool that they all could hold to that and give back, that is really important to be a giver rather then a taker. I feel really lucky about my life even more then i did befre listening to him. I believe it is really important that people do this for one another, helping out because one day you might need help too, the more you give the more you get back, carma. It is a great expirients to see around and help. Its all very important.

  42. When Mr Salerno. presented, I did not know that the Lakota were really that poor. I also did not know that they were also known as The Suh. They are very poor, but even though they are poor and have pretty terrible lives, I feel that they are happy because they are living like that because the Indian Reservation is something they can call there own. I felt bad for the kids who gave up some of the only things that they had and gave it to Mr. Salerno because they were just giving up lots of their possesions. When the boy gave him the only baseball card, I felt bad because one day he might wonder what had happened to it. Also, when they told us the rate of suicide and teacher drop outs etc., I felt very bad because kids should not have to go through some of that kind of stuff. Overall I learned that they were very different that what I had though they were.

  43. Mr Salerno's presentation made me want to cry. Hearing about the terrible living conditions and just how little the people have. It it very sad that in america there is a place like that even though we have the money needed to fix it. I would probably go to help the Lakota because they need all the help they can get. With their suicide rate and all other death rates kids and teens and adults don't deserve to go through that kind of emotional pain. I mean kids could think it was thier fault that the teacher left and that would ruin them because of how nice of people they are.
